I love that this community is getting together to discuss issues that affect all of us – you all are amazing! There are so many issues I can think of but the topic I wanted to talk about first is motivating young people to know their purpose & worth, and to use their teen years to make a difference.
I’m in my early twenties (not so far away from my teen years :), and have such a heart for teens and tweens and the things that affect them today, one of the reasons I started a program & webzine for youth called Dreamer ENT (www.DreamerENT.com). I know this issue is broad but there are many sub-issues that fall under it that I’m passionate about: Giving youth encouragement to reach for dreams and passions at a young age, spreading love and tolerance to prevent bullying & suicide, finding mentors that can be there when parents aren’t always, supporting kids with disabilities or from difficult backgrounds, promoting healthier living, fighting against abuse of all types (sexual, substance, etc.)… I could go on and on.
Young people can do amazing things, from starting their own charities and businesses to raising money and awareness for countries like Haiti. Many times, though society and the media portrays teens as uncaring, passive and moral-less, & only caring about fashion, entertainment and fun. Those interests are not wrong but there are so many other things that young people care about that need to be brought to the forefront.
With just a little push in the right direction, mentors & support, this generation of teens can be change-makers, dreamers and doers who don’t waste their youth waiting for when they are older. If the media and more adults took more responsibility of nurturing teens instead of only focusing on the negative and the entertaining, it could make a world of a difference!
I love that Corbin’s group is encouraging us young people, and everyone else, to look for ways to change the world – if we all take the next step of action that would be even more amazing! I’m also looking forward to Monique Coleman’s show Gimme Mo (http://gimmemonique.tumblr.com) that’s focusing on giving youth a voice. You guys rock!
Supporting young people is the passion of my heart, especially since I can relate with many issues I mentioned before in hardships I went through as a teen. Check out my sites at www.dreamerENT.com and www.dreamfleur.com to learn more about this movement I’m working on.
